Padres spring Training Report – Mar. 25, 2015

sd logoOn a day where the Padres gave some of their non starters a chance to play they fell to the rival Dodgers 9-5.  It was strange seeing Yasmani Grandal in a Dodgers costume, and I’m still not used to seeing Carlos Quentin roaming around the first base bag, nor Padres pitchers hitting HR’s in spring games, but all of that was part of today’s game.

As well as this…

  • Derek Norris – Hit his first home run of the spring. He also had a single, so hopefully he’s starting to find his groove at the plate. His 2 hits today brought his average up to .152.
  • Frank Garces – As the decisions on the opening day bullpen continue to be pondered, the young lefty just keeps getting batters out. His last 5 outings have been scoreless. He’s the iceman, impressively  unflusterable for such a young player, and is making a nice case for himself.
  • Jason Lane – The hitter  Jason Lane, not the pitcher Jason Lane who allowed three long balls today. Lane the hitter hit a home run of his own today, the first time a Friar pitcher had gone deep in a spring game since Jake Peavy hit one in 2008.

I know, short list today, but it reflects the nature of the day’s game.  Tomorrow Despaigne will go against the D’Backs at Talking Stick. Game time will be 1:05, with Uncle Teddy and myself bringing you the action on the Mighty 1090. Hope you join us!

I would just add that the struggles Carlos Quentin had at first base in this game showed that you can’t just take someone and plug them in there. Q is a good athlete but has never played the position before this spring. It takes a lot of hard work and practice to get the nuances down in order to be ready to play 1B in MLB. That having been said I have been impressed with some of the plays he has been able to make as well. I felt for him yesterday as he missed two throws from Solarte that should have been caught.
