Padres Spring Training Report – Mar. 22, 2014

gyorko, jedd springTyson Ross had a nice rebound outing today against the White Sox, going 6 2/3 innings of 1-run ball as the Pads played to a 3-3 tie today.  After allowing 12 hits and 6 runs in his last outing, the tall right hander did a much better job keeping the fastball down, while still showing his usual good SL, and some change  ups as well.

Jedd Gyorko swung the hot bat today hitting two doubles, and driving in the first Friar run.  Ryan jackson was the hero at the end with an RBI single to score the tying run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

Other news in camp included…

  • The announcement by Buddy that Ian Kennedy will be the game #2 starter, and Tyson Ross has game #3.  No other news about the rotation was given.  However, given the fact that 2 of the first 5 days of the season are no off days for the Pads, they could conceivably go with a four man staff until the 10th day of the season, and not need the 5th starter but once until day 17 of the season.
  • Cameron Maybin played lithe catch in the outfield, and has started doing some very light weight exercises.
  • Donn Roach got a little boost of confidence today as Buddy mentioned that the next few roster cuts leading up to opening night are bound to be difficult, but that the way Roach has pitched he has put himself on the map for possibly breaking with the club.

That’s it for tonight.  Short one…family is in town.  My son’s baseball team was an inspiration for me tonight as the boys Played poorly in their first game of the evening, but then came back to play their best game ever against a physically bigger club who had outscored their previous three opponents in this tournament by a collective score of 45-2.  My son’s team played as perfect a gams as I have ever seen, and was tied with what was perceived to be the superstars of the tournament 0-0 after the regulation 6 innings. They went into extra innings under California tie Breaker rules and took down Goliath in the 7th.  It was a great moment of triumph for the kids, and a great reminder to me that no matter what it says should happen on paper, with team work and  execution of the fundamentals anything can happen.

Tomorrow the Pads travel to Surprise to take on the Rangers at 1:05.  Josh Johnson will go against Joe Saunders.  Hope you’ll join Jesse Agler and me for the call on the Mighty 1090.  Good night everybody!
