Padres Spring Training Report – Mar. 17, 2015

sd logoSplit squad situation for the Padres today, so I had to choose which game I would go watch.  Although the rest of the world was going to watch the home game against the Brewers (which the Pads lost 6-4), I really felt the more important action was going to take place at Hohokam Stadium.  Specifically watching Odrisamer Despaigne and Matt Wisler throw as the try to unseat Morrow as the presumed 5th starter.  The Friars took it on the chin 13-2, so you can already guess how the day went for the pitching staff.

  • Despaigne – Did a decent job early of mixing his speeds and arm slots as he can do.  By the fourth inning they were catching on a little bit, waiting for the off speed early, and looking fast ball after he didn’t get swings on the breaking balls off the plate. They scored 2 runs off him that last inning. Overall some really good off speed pitches thrown over his four innings, with the hitters catching on to it by the fourth. I’ve said it before and I will say it again when he uses his fastball confidently and aggressively is when he is most effective, making his off speed almost impossible to stay back on.
  • Wisler – Rough, rough day for Wis.  He couldn’t locate many of his pitches, made lots of mistakes in the zone, and was punished for it.  Yes, there were some misplays, and a couple of bad hops behind him as well, but let’s not sugar coat it.  It wasn’t his day, lasting only 1 inning allowing 6 hits and 7 earned runs.
  • MedicaEn Fuego!!!!  Forget putting Medica on the back of his jersey, it should read “En Fuego”, ’cause he’s on fire! Another HR today that he hit perfectly on the screws. It was as loud a sound off a bat as I’ve heard all spring. If you’re going to go inside with a FB to him it better have some hair on it or it will end up a souvenir like this one today. Stay hot Tommy!

Luck of the Irish was not with the Friars today, and no one unseated Morrow today.  Short list of highlights, but that’s what happens when you lose 13-2.  Let’s try it again tomorrow.

What a relief to see the proper credit given to Medica, alias En Fuego.
He is completely ignored from top to bottom from the most elite snobs in the sports realm.
I am a 78 year old Brooklyn Dodger fan as a boy in New Jersey, and I have seen some great and exciting players in my life.
Medica is already exciting, and can develop into a great player if given a steady chance, not taken in and out like a yo yo.
    Keep up the great reporting.

Im a big Medica fan, too..and I think they’ll find a spot for him, when ST breaks. VERY valuable bat off the bench for late game situations and spot starts.

but if he wants to play everyday, I think he needs to clean up his glove work, and be a lot more consistent. His highs and lows are equally stunning.

in the end, I think he can be somebody’s starting first baseman, eventually..and at the very least, he could be a Sweeney-type pinch hitter. Either way, this kid can carve out a very nice living, as long as he keeps hitting.

I would say that despite James Shields giving up the 3-run bomb to Carlos Gomez (and it was a BOMB) it was a productive day for him and Derek Norris. This is what Spring Training is for…to work out the kinks in pitch selection and get the pitcher and catcher on the same page. Also, I like the way Cameron Maybin has looked this spring. Maybe this is the season it all clicks.

Highlight for the other game : Shields and his RBI. Hey everyone Shields can hit! That was my highlight. Loved the HRs but I was pleasantly surprised that our AL pitcher can hit.

I am sure the people sitting behind this guy were just thrilled.
