Congratulations to Jedd Gyorko and the San diego Padres for agreeing to a guaranteed 5 year extension worth a reported $35M, with an additional $13M option for the sixth year.
“We are happy to sign Jedd and secure the rights to two free agent years,” said Byrnes. “Jedd is a homegrown player in his fifth season with the Padres organization and has been a consistent performer every step of the way. He has shown us a real commitment to this organization and to the city of San Diego.”
The breakdown is reported to be as follows:
- 2015 – $2M
- 2016 – $4M
- 2017 – $6M
- 2018 – $9M
- 2019 – $13M
- 2020 – $13M club option, with $1M buyout
The deal is the third largest contract in MLB history for someone with one year of service.
Gyorko, 25, had an excellent rookie season in 2013, hitting .249 while leading the team in both HR’s with 23, and RBI with 63 . He led all Major League rookies with his 23 bombs, which were the third-most ever by a rookie second baseman in Major League history. Since RBI became an official statistic in 1920, he became the first rookie second baseman to ever lead his team in RBI and just the second Padres rookie to lead the club along with Padres Hall of Famer Nate Colbert who recorded 66 RBI in 1969.
It’s a deal that provides security for the player, and hopefully proves to be a shrewd financial decision for the team as Jedd continues to grow as an MLB player, and salaries continue to rise.
Congratulations to both sides!
