Last week I commented on my Facebook page that I would not be surprised to see Nick VIncent re-called from AAA-Tucson sooner rather than later, and his latest opportunity with the big club is now here.
To make room for Vincent on the roster Ross Ohlendorf was optioned to Tucson.
This is the 26 year old Vincent’s fourth stint with the Padres this season. Since his last reassignment to Tucson he has posted a 2.61 ERA (3 ER/10.1 IP) with two saves, eight strikeouts and three walks in 11 outings. In seven relief outings for San Diego this year, the right-hander is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA (4 ER/8.0 IP).
I liked Vincent’s stuff in spring training, but even more important to me than the hard cutting action on his fastball was the bull dog, pound the strike zone mentality he showed. Hopefully, as with many young pitchers, he feels a little more comfortable with each exposure to the big leagues, and can become a valuable innings eater for Buddy out of the ‘pen.
It’s tryout time for a lot of these youngsters in the Padres bullpen right now. It will be fun and interesting to watch the competition, adn see which of them can step up and separate themselves.
