Padres Make Second Round Of Cuts:

sd horizontal on blueThe Padres announced their second round of cuts from big league camp today.  Little worse sight in a clubhouse than a guy clearing out his locker.  Fortunately for all those moving today, it is to minor league camp and not out of baseball, as it will be for some this spring throughout MLB.

Those moved out today are:

OPTIONED: (on 40-man roster, so optioned to minor leagues)

  • Keyvius Sampson – Showed his good arm.  Needs to pitch, and will do so in AAA El Paso.
  • Rymer Liriano – Showed he’s healthy from the TJ surgery that cost him last year, and that he still has tools to be a potentially exciting MLB player.  Has many rough edges to smooth out, and will likely do so at AA.

REASSIGNED TO MINOR LEAGUE CAMP: (not on 40-man roster, so simply reassigned)

  • Jonathan Galvez – Will spend more time this year focusing on playing 3B.  Has good range and glove, but needs to smooth out his throwing which can be erratic at times with his unusually short arm action.
  • Leonel Campos – He needs to work on throwing strikes with his fastball.  Not even on the corners strikes, just strikes to get to his plus slider that can put guys away.  With only 1 full year of pro ball under his belt this natural athlete has already come a long way in a short period of time, but at age 26 needs to figure it out fairly quickly now.

There are now 52 players still in camp, with more thinning of the heard to come.  Still some fairly obvious ones to go, but there are some interesting battles going on for final bullpen and bench spots. Will keep you posted.
