Padres Make First Round Of Cuts:

sd horizontal on blueIt’s never a fun topic, but the Padres made their first roster moves of the spring today.  Buddy announced the following:

OPTIONED: (on 40-man roster, so optioned to minor leagues)

  • Juan Oramas – Likely going to start season at AAA
  • Yeison Asencio – Showed good tools, need to play and continue to refine his game.

REASSIGNED TO MINOR LEAGUE CAMP: (not on 40-man roster, so simply reassigned)

  • Joe Ross – Handled himself very well in camp both on the mound, assimilating with the older players, and learning all the plays.  Nice first impression.
  • Daniel Robertson – Pads know what he is capable of.  Solid body of minor league work, and will get other opportunities to play in big league spring training games throughout the spring.
  • Adys Portillo – Has been told he will now work exclusively as a reliever to see if his strong arm can be even more of a weapon in shorter relief situations.

There will be more cuts coming during the next week, and will likely be a few at a time on any given day as opposed to larger bulk trimmings done only on Sundays.

With these moves there are now 56 players in camp.

Stella, Dennis OGRady has thrown nicely and will not make the team this year out of spring. Needs some seasoning still.

Gee I really liked the heat from O’grady – I hope they keep him. (I also hope I spelled his name right.)

No surprises there. Like the Adys move to the Pen. I hope Danny Robertson gets a chance somewhere, the kid try’s so darn hard.

Thanks for the update, Bob. I’d really like to see DRob get a shot this season. Love the way he plays. It’s infectious. Raises the level of the guys that play around him. Does the game right.
