So much for Safeco Field being a pitcher’s park tonight as the Mariners took down the padres 11-4. The Mariners launched an organizational record tying 6 home runs in their 15 hit barrage unleashed on the Padres staff.
Kennedy started it and was not sharp from the get go allowing four runs in the first inning as the first 6 batters reached base, the big blow being a 3-run HR by Seager.
The Friars had a chance to get back in the game right away as they loaded the bases the next inning with 2 outs, but with Paxton teetering on complete implosion they couldn’t deliver the killer blow and walked away with nothing.
Kennedy still searching to find himself allowed a solo HR in the 3rd to make it 5-0. The Pads still wouldn’t quit though as the next inning they again loaded the bases with 2 outs, but again couldn’t deliver, letting Paxton escape damage a second time by the skin of his teeth. Ian would bob and weave for a couple more innings but was out before the end of the 5th.
Kelley relieved Kennedy and the Mariners lead grew as he surrendered 2 runs and another HR to essentially put the game out of reach. Garces would pick up the last two innings an get stung for four runs including 3 more home runs to make it a half dozen for SEA on the night.
The Pads offense despite being wasteful early never gave up as they did score 3 in the 7th to keep from being shutout for the fourth time this road trip, and another in the 9th. Almonte reached base four times hitting in the lead off spot. Solarte, Gyrko and Middlebrooks each had a single and a walk, with Solarte driving in 2. Norris doubled and walked to drive in 1 and score 1. Not enough to cover the 11 runs given up.
Maybe more disappointing and concerning than the game loss was the last minute loss of Will Myers before the first pitch. He originally injured his left wrist sliding into a base in the AZ series. He hoped the day off yesterday would be enough for it to heal, but apparently it was not as he left batting practice early with continued discomfort on the follow through of his swing. There is no belief rightness that there is structural damage and the hope is that it will be a day-to-day situation that won’t require any extended time off. Fingers crossed!
James Shields, who received his 2014 A.L. Championship ring today from Dayton Moore, will look to get the Pads a win on the last day of the long trip. The ring by the way was tastefully done, and came with a beautiful wooden box complete with LED lights to make the diamonds shimmer – classy! First pitch is at 7:10, and Ted Leitner and I will be excited to have you with us for all the action on The Mighty 1090.
