Mike Montgomery…he was the story tonight in the Padres 5-0 loss to the Mariners. How can you not be the story when you pitch a 1-hit shutout and flirt with a no hitter into the 7th?
First the Padres story. Kennedy started for the Friars and looked sharp the first two innings. In the 3rd he allowed a solo HR. The 4th was opened with an error, a walk, and a single to center field that scored the runner who reached on the error. There would have been another error had Justin Upton not prevented it when his brother mishandled the ball hit to him but Justin alertly backed him up and threw out the runner trying to advance on the misplay. With two outs another HR was launched, this time a 2-run blast that put SEA up 4-0. The bullpen took over in the 6th and allowed 1 more run in the 9th.
The Montgomery story was a bit different. He threw mostly fastballs early with mixed command and few breaking balls, but the fastballs had good left to right angle as he pitched frequently inside to the righties. He mixed in some curves, sone changeups, and some cutters. He wasn’t precision sharp, but was extremely effective. In the 7th Solarte broke up his no-hitter, with a double…and that was it. That was the offense.
Montgomery’s velocity dropped after the 6th, but he used the off speed more effectively and sharply as the game went on to compensate. Bottom line was he was in control of this ball game from the start and walked away with his second complete game shutout in a row.
Shields tomorrow for the Friars. Game is at 12:40. Uncle Teddy will be back and he and I will broadcast the ballgame on the mighty 1090. Look forward to having you with us!
