Two great games in a row, and back to back impressive wins for the Padres as they took down the Cardinals tonight 2-1. Whether the Friars won or not the last two nights have just flat out been some exciting and generally well played baseball. That the Friars came out on top, well that of course is some mighty sweet icing on the cake.
For his second start in a row Cashner looked sharp. He had excellent command of his fastball and used it effectively and often. He made very few mistakes over the plate while mixing in effective sliders and changeups. He retired the first ten batters he faced, and needed to be that sharp as Wacha was matching him scoreless inning for scoreless inning.
The 0-0 tie was finally broken in the 5th as the first three Cards batters of the inning reached base via single, single, error to load the bags. Cash induced a ground ball double play which allowed a run to cross, but it kept the inning from becoming a disastrous game ender.
The offense finally figured out Wacha in the 7th. Actually to be more specific Gyorko figured out Wacha as he jumped on a fastball up in the zone and sent it over the left field wall for a solo shot to tie things up at one apiece.
Cash started the 7th, but walked the lead off man which brought Murphy out to the mound to summon the bullpen. Maurer came in and immediately rolled a ground ball twin killing, then retied the next batter to take care of business in efficient fashion. Benoit did his job next and tossed a scoreless 8th.
Cards closer, Rosenthal, came on for the 9th inning sporting an N.L. leading 23 2/3 scoreless streak. With one out Solarte picked a fastball out over that he liked and drove it to the gap in right center field for his second career triple. Gyorko then put together a great at bat as he fouled off several tough two strike offerings before getting a slider out over that he could pull into left for a base hit. Solarte scored and the Pads found themselves on top for the first time of the game 2-1.
That of course meant Kimbrel time. He came in firing strikes and faced the minimum three as he locked down the win and his 21st save of the season. Another well played, well pitched, and timely hit game for the Pads to get this road trip off to a 2-0 start. Very nice!!!!
Despaigne will try to extend the friars win streak to three games for only the third time all season. It’s a day game in St. Louis with the first pitch getting fired at 11:15 am PST. Can’t wait for you to join Uncle Teddy and myself for the call on the Mighty 1090.
