Behind an excellent starting effort by Odrisamer Despaigne the Pads took down the D’backs tonight 5-1. The Cuban right hander making his first start of the season pitched every bit as effectively as his recent relief outing where he went 4 2/3 of scoreless ball against the Giants. Tonight it was a 7-inning, 2-hit, 1-run effort, taming the snakes with good aggressive use of his fastball that helped set up his slider, changeup, and later in the game his big slow curve.
For the offense it was a spread out attack with Kemp, Norris, and Alonso all driving in runners, and Upton driving in himself with his second HR of the season. Kemp had 2 hits including a triple on the evening and scored 2 to spearhead the attack.
On the defensive side the play of the game for the Friars came from the same guy who made the costly error last night, Yangervis Solarte. With a run in and a runner on second in the 4th he speared a hot shot to his right and from his knees out near second base made a firm throw to first to save the run and record the second out. Despaigne retired the next batter and the biggest threat of the game was snuffed out.
Well played game all around for the boys with the pace being set by Despaigne, and a nice win to tie the series. Tomorrow Brandon Morrow toes the slab for the Friars with first pitch coming at 6:10. Hope you’ll join Uncle Teddy and myself on the mighty 1090 for all the action!
