Padres Game Recap – Apr. 13, 2015

sd logoTough one tonight for the Padres as the boys dropped this one to the Diamondbacks 8-4.  The word “dropped” is there for a reason as this one was more given away than lost with four unearned runs crossing the plate that were the difference in the game.

Cashner started and for the second outing in a row was not his usual sharp self. His velocity has been fine, but his fastball command has not been what we are accustomed to seeing out of him, and the hitters have been letting him know.  In the second inning he allowed back to back singles to start things off, then a throwing error by Solarte (with the help of some unusually flat feet by Alonso) helped open the flood gates to a long and costly inning.  Instead of 2 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd the errant throw plated a run, and set up a 2nd and 3rd 1-out situation that proved too much for Cash to pitch over.   Missing his spots he allowed another double and single that scored four runs (all unearned), while expending 32 pitches to do it.

The Friars would not quit though and chipped away with an Alonso HR in the 2nd, and a Solarte RBI 2B in the 3rd, and RBI 1B in the 5th to pull to within 4-3.  Meanwhile, Cashner did a nice job of finding a way to become effective by working back and forth with his changeup and slider, along with finding command of the fastball to the glove side to keep himself in the game and the score tight through the sixth. It was a gutsy effort on his part.

The Pads, however, did not do the little things to win the game. Along with the big error, they also made some running blunders with Cash getting thrown out after over running second base in the 3rd, and Kemp getting thrown out trying to go from first to third on a base hit in the midst of a rally in the 8th with the team trailing by 4.  Aggressive approach in both instances, which we want to encourage and applaud, but maybe a bit overzealous both times.  Combine that with a failed bunt attempt that ultimately cost a run, and a play that allowed Inciarte to stretch a single into a double that probably should not have happened, but set up an other run to score, and the Pads just did not do enough little things to earn the W.

Regroup, and come back tomorrow with Odrisamer Despaigne on the hill for the Friars. First pitch is at 7:10, and hope you’ll join Jesse Agler and me for all the action.

Felt badly for Solarte and Alonso. They are both usually pretty consistent. I agree, Alonso was flat footed that one, did not move off of first. Cashner had a lot more movement on his fastball in the 93-94 mph range, with more last second break than in the 96-98 range, where it seemed flat. He was also lower in the strike zone with the lower velocity. My main critique, though, falls onto Kelley. He has to ramp it up and figure it out. I’m not sure how long Preller will allow this. He didn’t seem to waste time moving Vincent down. I have a feeling Kelley, being a veteran, probably has no options left and would either have to be traded (good luck with that right now) or released. I would love to see Quack back with a shot as the 7th inning guy. Arizona has been playing well so far, much better than expected, and they took advantage of mistakes. I will give them credit. It’s just one game (I keep telling myself…lol). Time to pick it up and take the rest.

I wish Gyorko would have played last night. He wouldn’t have made that error and Yes, I know he wouldn’t have given us 2 RBI s either but that was a game changer. How is he going to start hitting if he is sitting? And Kelley needs to go. I’m done with him the first time he ever played.

Kelley has not looked good, bring back the Quack? Why did black leave him in so long?

Hey scan!! Love your blogs. You left out one thing in this one: Padres bullpen. What happened to our #1 bullpen this year? Kelley is clearly not cutting it for us. Had our bullpen done what it usually does the entire game changes and we would have overcome early game woes and win that game.
