Padres Continue Youth Commitment, Give Hundley Contract Extension Through 2014

Congratulations to Padres catcher Nick Hundley for receiving a contract extension through the 2014 season with a club option for 2015.  

Along with the club wanting to lock up some of it’s home grown talent, “Nick has developed into one of our club’s core players,” said Byrnes. “He impacts the game on both offense and defense and has evolved into a leader on the field and in the clubhouse.”

Hundley, 28, set career highs last year in bating average .288, home runs 9, runs 34, hits 81, on-base percentage .247 and slugging percentage .477. Defensively his progress has been consistent as well, and in 2011 he threw out a career-high 24 would-be base stealers.

The talks started at the end of last year with former GM Jed Hoyer, but talks took a more aggressive turn when Josh Byrnes came on board.  When asked about this new approach recently shown by the Padres to lock in younger players Hundley believes “The talent that’ s been brought in, and that they are making a commitment to is a step in the right direction not only to win now, but for the future as well.”

Nick is one of the friendliest and engaging players you will ever meet, and one of the hardest workers you will find as well.  He’s worked his tail off to improve every aspect of his game. The extension provides some financial stability for Nick, but also some security for the Padres as well, avoiding the uncertainty of arbitration and providing a strong mentoring presence for the talented young catchers in the pipeline such as Yasmani Grandal and Austin Hedges.  Nice to see some depth developing in the system at such an important position.

Congratulations to Nick and the Padres as they continue to forge a new direction for the club that we have not seen in at least a decade of putting their money where their mouth is about committing to their younger players and the future.
