Can Matt Antonelli be what everybody thought he would be a couple of years ago? I know that he did some work in the offseason but can he be the second baseman of the future like everybody said he was? – Abraham
Great question, and one that a lot of people, including in the Padre front office, are wondering. Give credit to Matt for having a great spring training, batting .378, 1 HR, 3 2B’s, 9 RBI before being sent down to minor league camp today. He made some changes for himself during the off season, but most importantly he seems to have regained confidence in himself and his ability to hit a baseball. The turn around appeared in the numbers, but it was also the way he was driving the ball again that reopened the eyes of evaluators within the organization.
The true test now will be whether the hot spring translates into results during a full season. Only time will tell, but clearly if he is able to re-emerge as a legitimate prospect, it ads even more depth to the Padres infield future which is already anticipating the emergence of Logan Forsythe and James Darnell.
