The Padres are still looking for their first Cactus League win after today’s lopsided 13-4 defeat to the hot swinging Mariners (Box Score).
Seattle drew first blood in the first with their first two hitters of the ball game hitting doubles off Pads starter Dustin Moseley, who settled down after that retiring his next six batters straight. The Pads responded with a run of their own thanks to consecutive singles by Alonso, Quentin, and Hundley, but with the bases loaded and one out they couldn’t cause any more damage. Seattle then pushed two more across against Micah Owings in the third, and the Friars would be in catch up mode the rest of the day.
Jorge Reyes allowed a run over a fairly effective two innings of work, and Ernesto Frieri gave up an unearned run while basically throwing fine, making it a 6-1 deficit in the 6th. Quentin hit a double off former Padre Oliver Perez for his second hit of the day to start a 4 -run 6th for the Pads, that also included an RBI single by Jeremy Hermida, and a 2-run triple by Jason Haggerty, but that was a close they would get. Nick Vincent threw a clean 7th inning, but Cory Burns and Brad Boxberger combined over the next two innings to allow 7 runs to cross to put this one out of reach.
The pitching positives would be Moseley locking in after the first two batters he faced, along with quality efforts by Reyes, Frieri, and Vincent. For the hitters it was nice to see Quentin get two hits, Jaff Decker go deep, Haggerty triple in 2, and youngster Edinson Rincon double looking good again at the plate this spring.
One note of interest, Everth Cabrera played CF for several innings today, something he has never done in a professional regular season game…and didn’t look that bad! He had one ball hit over his head, which I don’t think anyone would have caught, and bobbled a grounder that he was charging, but was not shaky at all in making several other plays, including a tricky little play where a ball in the gap that he cut off checked up on him, but was able to react and still get the throw in quickly to third. Overall not a bad first effort in my opinion.
It is also worth noting that Chase Headley was supposed to start at third base, but was quite literally a last minute scratch with a tight lower back. Hopefully nothing serious.
Looking forward to watching Tim Stauffer, and Robbie Erlin work tomorrow against the Royals.
