Win or lose tomorrow the Padres have given their fans one hell of a fun ride this season! It always amazes me when after a long and grueling 161 games of the 162 game season, it ultimately comes down to the final game to determine a winner.
In fact, it may even take a couple of games longer if the Pads and Braves both win tomorrow.
So here are the possible scenarios to determine the post-season participants:
1. If the Padres win, and the Braves lose tomorrow: If the Padres complete the sweep of the Giants, and the Braves are swept by the Phillies, then the Padres and Giants would be tied with records of 91-71, while the Braves would be at 90-72. This would mean that both SF and SD would have better records than the Braves, so the Bravos would be eliminated. The MLB rules state that a divisional tie will first be decided by the regular season head to head match up between the two teams. Since the Padres would have the better overall record between them and the Giants during the season, the Padres would be declared the N.L.West champions, while SF would be awarded the N.L. Wild Card slot.
2. If the Padres win, and the Braves win tomorrow: If both the Padres and the Braves win tomorrow, that would create a situation where the Giants, Padres, and Braves would all have an identical 91-71 record, creating a 3-way tie for the final two playoff spots. The first step would be to determine the N.L. West winner, which would be done with a single game between the Padres and Giants on Monday at PETCO. The winner would be declared the N.L.West Champions, while the loser of that game would then play the Braves on Tuesday in Atlanta to determine the wild card winner.
3. If the padres lose, and the Braves lose tomorrow: If both the Padres and the Braves lose, the Giants would win the N.L. West division title, while the Padres and Braves would be tied for the wild card berth. They would play a single game on Monday, (I believe at a site to be determined by coin flip), and the winner would be declared the Wild Card.
4. If the padres lose, and the Braves win tomorrow: The Giants would win the N.L. West, and the Braves would win the Wild Card.
Whatever happens tomorrow, and possibly in the days that follow, the Padres have beaten every set of odds that have been placed on them from the beginning of the season to this final series. At no point during this season has anyone in the game, or covering the game, given the padres a chance to come out anywhere but on the bottom. Yet, here they are entering the final game of the season with a chance to win the N.L. West title.
They’ve beaten every odds maker, and met every challenge up to this point of their improbable season…I’m sure not going to bet against them tomorrow!
