Fan Poll Results – Biggest HOF Snub for ’15?

You were asked “Which ONE candidate that did not get elected in this year’s HOF vote was the most egregious omission?”

In one of our most participated in votes ever, here’s what you said:

1. Mike Piazza – 28.7%
2. Pete Rose – 21.5%
3. Alan Trammel – 17.9%
4. None, the voters got it right – 11.1%
5. Tim Raines – 6.8%
6. Jeff Bagwell – 6.5%
7. Lee Smith – 3.9%
8. Mark McGuire – 3.3%
9. Edgar Martinez – 0.3%

I have to be honest that I am absolutely shocked that so many of the voters would choose to have Pete Rose enshrined. I can only assume one of two things of those voters who want him in:

• They view the HOF not as a hallowed shrine of the game which if such should honor only those who respected baseball’s most protected tenets, but rather they see it as simply a museum with no connection moral, ethical,  or otherwise to MLB.  If this is the case, then so be it.  If the HOF is nothing more than a museum then it really doesn’t matter that much who gets in or for what reason.
• They don’t understand the true significance of gambling on baseball and knowingly breaking the top rule posted in every MLB clubhouse for decades, “Any player, umpire, or club official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has no duty to perform shall be declared ineligible for one year. Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible.”  If you don’t understand the significance of this rule and the severity of what Rose did in violating it  then we should talk.

I was also surprised at how low the vote was for Jeff Bagwell, who’s numbers seem to warrant enshrinement especially considering the power numbers he posted in one of the most notoriously toughest hitters parks ever created, and the site of my MLB debut (lucky me!) – the Astrodome.
