There’s no way to sugar coat it, that was a rough 14-3 loss to the Astros tonight. Not much went right for the Pads, especially from the pitching perspective. The Friar hurlers allowed 17 hits, including 3 home runs. They’ve been outscored 23-7 in the first two games and the score is reflective of the difference in the quality of play over the last 48 hours. The Astros have played every aspect of the game well, while the Friars have not.
Ross started and was not terrible, but did make a few mistakes and when he did the ‘Stros made him pay. First inning a slider catches to much of the plate to Valbuena who singles, then Gattis hits an elevated fastball to dead center and with a little hope from the glove of Wil Myers finds it’s way over the fence. He allowed another run in the fourth, and another in the fifth thanks to a lead off walk to the pitcher. Not terrible stuff wise, but made enough mistakes to open the door and HOU took advantage.
That being said the Pads were still in it at that point, thanks to an RBI 1B by Solarte, and a HR for myers. After the 5th though, that was the last the Pads would see of the Astros as from the 6th inning on they simply pulled away with 1 in the 6th, 2 in both the 7th and 8th, then 4 in the ninth…Despaigne, Quackenbush, and Mazzoni all taking it on the chin.
Nothing to do but turn the page and get ’em tomorrow. It would seem likely that if the Pads can bring in a fresh arm from AAA by game time tomorrow there could be a roster move to report.
Some good news that took place before the game today was a simulated 2 inning game for Josh Johnson. He looked smooth and strong in his work out, showing excellent life his fastball and already respectable off speed offerings despite the long lay off recovering from TJ surgery. Another positive step in his comeback, and it was fun to see so many of his teammates make the effort to be out there for his first visit to the Petco mound, and give him ovations for each inning of work. He could be a great asset to the organization for the second half.
Cashner will try to turn the Padres fortunes around tomorrow with first pitch being throw at 12:40 for flash back Wednesday. Look forward to you joining Ted Leitner and myself for the action the Mighty 1090.
