Well, you can’t blame tonight’s 9-4 loss to the Astros on the hitting. The lineup has been doing a pretty solid job most of the year staying near the top of the leader board in most offensive categories thus far, and came back twice from deficits to tie this game, but ultimately the pitching and defense gave the Astros yet another lead that was just too much to overcome.
Shields and McHugh looked really solid through the first 3 innings, each posting zeros. Shields gave ground first allowing a solo HR to Lowrie on a hanging CH. The next inning it was a combination of missed locations and defense that allowed 2 more to cross. A dropped ball by Amarista on a steal attempt that would have been an out extended the inning allowing the 2 unearned runs to cross.
As mentioned above, however, the Friars came fighting back scoring 3 in 5th to tie it with the the big hit coming off the bat of Myers for a 2-run double. He was then driven in by Solarte, all taking place with 2 outs.
With the game tied Maurer came on for the 7th, and surrendered a HR to the first batter he faced to put the Pads into catch up mode once again. But that’s what this Friar offense is so capable of doing – making deficits disappear with hard fought at bats and timely hits. Amarista set the table in the 7th for Solarte (yep, him again!) driving him in with a double to tie it again at 4.
Normally this would be a situation where the Pads would be feeling like they were sitting in the king position. Tie game, late, with one of the most dependable bullpens in baseball coming on to hold the line until the new and improved offense takes care of business. Didn’t work out that way though, as in the 8th Benoit simply did not have anywhere close to his normal overpowering and well placed repertoire. He was tagged for 3 runs with the help of back to back walks to start the inning followed by single, double, and it was all over.
Mazzoni made his MLB debut for the Pads in the 9th, and was rudely christened with a 2-run HR to put it out of reach 9-4 Not even this offense becoming known for it’s “never say die” persistence could cover that ground, and the Pads suffered their 5th loss in the last 6 games.
Ross wil look to turn things around for the fellas tonight with the first pitch being fired at 7:10. Look forward to you joining Uncle Teddy and me for the action on the Mighty 1090.
