A fun time was had by all who attended tonight the annual Padres Organizational Awards Banquet held at the beautiful San Diego Hall Of Champions Museum. There was a great turnout of players and fans, and plenty of excited baseball talk as pitchers and catchers are prepared to report in just a couple of days.
The recipients for this year’s awards were:
- Favorite New Padre (voted by Madres) – Alexi Amarista
- Chairman’s Award (contributions to community) – Will Venable
- Darrel Akerfelds Bullpen Award (previously fireman’s Award) – Luke Gregerson
- Clyde McCullough Award (Pitcher of Year; BBWAA vote) – Clayton Richard
- MVP Award (BBWAA vote) – Chase Headley
The Minor League Awards were presented as follows:
- Denny Galehouse Award (Scout of the Year) – Willie Bosque
- Jack Krol Award (Minor League Coach) – Nelson Cruz
- Pitcher of the Year – Matt Wisler
- Defensive Player of the Year – Rico Noel (2nd year winner)
- Baserunner of the Year – Rico Noel
- Offensive Player of the Year – Jedd Gyorko (2nd year winner)
Favorite moment of the evening for me was seeing the entire Padres bullpen, including trevor Hoffman, gathered at the podium to pay tribute to their pitching coach Darrel “Ak”Akerfelds, as the award for the the best bullpen pitcher renamed in his honor was presented for the first time.
Congratulations to all of this year’s winners, and looking forward to seeing them all on the fields in Peoria in a few days.
