The Padres forged a comeback after trailing by 5 runs early in tonights contest against the Dodgers, but ultimately fell short for the third straight night to their division rivals 6-5.
THE GOOD:
- Padres didn’t quit and came back from being down 5-0 after the 4th.
- Much better defensive effort tonight as a whole. More nice digs out of the dirt by Yonder Alonso at first.
- 6 solid innings of work out of bullpen: Thatcher, Brach, Gregerson, Cashner, Street, and Bass combining for 6ip, 1r.
THE BAD:
- Dustin Moseley not sharp in his season debut, despite being very sharp most of spring.
- Padres offense, despite scoring 5 runs, only puts together 4 hits, and needs the help of 5 walks, a hits batsman, and a wild pitch in the 5th innings to finally get some runs on the board. Other than that 5th inning tonight they have been blanked their last 20 innings.
THE DIFFERENCE:
- Two, 2 out walks issued in the 3rd, that would end up scoring on Andre Ethier’s 2B.
- The only Padres rally of the last two nights being snuffed out prematurely when Orlando Hudson was thrown out rounding first base too far after his run tying 1B.
- Hanging changeup to Dee Gordon in the 11th with 2 outs that was hit for a double driving in the winning run.
The Padres played crisper baseball on the defensive side tonight, but were hurt by elevated pitches in the very early innings and last inning of the game, and their offense has yet to click in. As frustrating as it is not to have the first W of the season on the board yet, as the old saying goes it’s a marathon not a race. Hopefully the Pads can salvage the final game of this opening series tomorrow, and get back to the confident style of play on both sides of the ball they showed the last 3 weeks of spring training.
