The Padres lost to the Cardinals today 10-3. Although their season high five game win streak came to an end, the Friars still ended the homestead with a series victory against MLB’s winningest team, and have won nine of their last twelve contests.
Rea was looking to help the Pads finish their second consecutive series sweep, and improve upon his unblemished 2-0 record, but neither was to be. The wind was let out of both of those sails early and it started with the issuance of a one out walk to Pham. Rea then threw wildly to first in a pick off attempt which sent Pham all the way to third. Peralta then hit a hooking liner to third which Solarte could have caught for at least one out and possibly two with the likely double up of Pham off third, but instead it hit off the end of his mitt as he appeared to rush to snare the ball and race to the bag before making the initial catch which resulted in a run crossing the plate and an E-5. Heyward then singled, as did Molina to score another run. Piscotty capped the inning off with what would ultimately be the knockout blow with a two-run triple and the Cards were instantly on top 4-0.
The Padres tried to climb back in it with a run in the 2nd thanks to a Barmes RBI single, but that would be all they could muster off Cards starter Wacha.
Rea settled down a little after the first then allowed another in the 4th, which would end up being his last frame of the day. Despaigne took over and posted zeros in the 5th and 6th but the 7th was not his lucky lady tonight as three runs crossed to make it 8-1, with Piscotty chiming in with a HR. Kimbrel came on for an inning of work in the 9th and surrendered 2 more runs as Piscotty hit his second HR of the ballgame.
The Friars as usual did not quit and made some noise in the 9th, but with too far to travel in too little time to hand the Cardinals what would have been their first sweep of the season the Pads came up short.
Monday is a day off and a travel day for the fellas as they head out to Wshington for a 3 game set against the Nats, followed by 3 versus the Fightin’ Phils. Despite the loss today, the Fathers lost no ground on the Dodgers, who lost for the 5th straight time today, and still trail the division leaders by 6.5 games. They are incredibly still within reach and have seven more head-to-head contests with the Dodgers and six with the Giants before season’s end.
Tuesday will feature Shields against SDSU legend Steven Strasburg with a scheduled 4;05 (PDT) first pitch. Just a heads up that I will not be with Ted on the broadcasts for the road trip, it will be Jesse with Ted instead. It’s my turn to enjoy a little family time, but I do expect to return to a couple more winning series and some heavy breathing down the necks of the Dodgers and Giants. Enjoy the games everyone, and I’ll look forward to connecting with all of you next home stand!
